Background:

The school was founded by a local builder, Stephen Dadson, who bequeathed a house in the village for the purpose. It moved to its present site in 1858. Its Victorian sandstone building was extended in 1995 to provide four new classrooms. The school enjoys its own woodland and shrubs are planted along a nature trail through the grounds. It also has its own pond, and two resident ducks which were reared from eggs by the children. There is active extra-curricular provision with chess, computer, cricket, drama, football, gymnastics, nature, netball and recorder among clubs on offer.
