The school was founded in 1957 as two single-sex technical high schools on the same site, which amalgamated in 1970. Housed in modern buildings with 15-acres of playing fields, it has specialist teaching areas for all departments, 10 laboratories, three design and technology rooms and seven computer rooms, and offers a choice of 25 A-level courses. Science, mathematics, English, music and drama are among the school's strengths; it has 12 musical ensembles, two specialist music teachers, junior and senior wind bands, choirs and orchestras. Specialist language college status. Over-subscribed, with 1.1 applications per place. Artsmark Silver; Investor in People status (1999); DfES achievement award (2003).
