Background:
Founded on eastern outskirts of Maidstone in 1940; in addition to some buildings dating from the 1960s, there are many recent specialist additions, including a purpose-built sixth-form block, music suite and auditorium, drama studio and several ICT suites. Full range of national curriculum subjects; students have option of studying two modern foreign languages and three sciences; also three GCSE short courses in ICT, religious education and citizenship. Additional sixth-form courses, such as AS accounting and Certificate in Financial Services, are offered in twilight sessions together with students from our partner secondary schools. Wide range of music and sports course and activities. Full-time careers adviser is employed to provide advice on higher education and employment, to extend the work-related learning programme and to keep the school in touch with the changing needs of the workplace; Excellence in Careers Award. Non-teaching student managers provide pastoral and academic support for all year-groups. Many partnerships with local schools. Also strong links with several universities and higher education colleges as well as many local community groups, such as Women's Refuge and the Citizen Advice Bureau. The school has established an internet caf£, with cutting-edge ICT equipment, for use by students and the local community. International School Award; several European partner schools; students and staff work with schools across the world as a member of World School. Excellent record in charity fundraising; students choose five or six charities to support and raise on average £10,000 a year. Students support disabled people in Romania and raise extra money to visit them and take them on holiday each year. Specialist business and enterprise college status from September 2003.
