Background:
Established in 1888, the school moved to its present country park estate in 1938, since then its buildings and facilities have developed and extended to meet changing needs. In 1997 the sixth form became co-educational. The school offers an extensive programme of musical and sporting activities such as junior and senior choirs, chamber choir, senior and intermediate ensembles, clarinet choir, swing band, recorder consort, netball, hockey, tennis, athletics, badminton, rounders, rugby, gymnastics, cricket and football. Other extra-curricular activities include dance, debating, computer club, Amnesty International, drama, chess, young writers club, Christian Union, and Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. There are also visits to places of interest and residential visits abroad. Specialist science college status from September 2005. Artsmark Gold (2006); Sportsmark; Investor in People status (2002).
