Background:
Originally a technical high school, Tunbridge Wells School for Boys became a grammar school in 1982. On a site to the north of Tunbridge Wells, the buildings date from 1962, but a new purpose-built mathematics and English block was opened in 2001; a music/drama block opened in September 2005. There is an adjacent sports centre for swimming, squash and a sports hall; the school also has extensive playing fields. One in five pupils learn a musical instrument. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place. DfES achievement award. Ethos: 'To allow students to become independent learners and to develop their full potential within a supportive, disciplined environment'.
