Background:
Fort Pitt Grammar School overlooks the River Medway, on a site where there was once a fortress to defend the approach from the river. A military hospital was later established on the site during the Crimean War, which included the first army medical school, established by Florence Nightingale. The school opened in 1926 and is a mixture of former hospital wards and new buildings, including a new science and computing block. It is over-subscribed, but is now expanding to accommodate a higher number of pupils. Specialist science college status.
