Background:

Founded in 1905, moved to current attractive hilltop site in Tonbridge overlooking Kentish Weald in 1913. Newer science and technology building developed in 1990s as well as modernised library and learning resource centre, music technology studio, and sixth-form suite; extensive playing fields and heated outdoor swimming pool. Boys accepted into sixth form from September 2002. Plans for new school complex, including sports hall and all-weather pitch. Wide choice of subjects in sixth form, with A-level and International Baccalaureate as alternative routes to higher education. Excellent language provision (German, Spanish, Latin, and Italian); all girls study technology to GCSE; strong GCSE drama and A-level/IB theatre studies. Students can personalise their learning; can be fast-tracked or given opportunities to study subjects early; sixth-formers can be offered the IPFS CErtificate of Personal Finance, as well as critical thinking and general studies. Wide curriculum provision includes classics, classical civilization, and economics. Students are members of the National Youth Sinfonia and National Children's Orchestra; music bursaries and chamber music also available; has two orchestras, three choirs which have performed at festivals; concert, jazz and rock bands. Drama also strong; recent productions in conjunction with Tonbridge School; popular dance performances. Sports offered include football, hockey, netball, tennis and athletics. National honours in acrobatics, cross-country and orienteering. Strong international dimension, including exchanges and cultural visits to Germany, Sri Lanka, and Singapore; work-related learning in France, Germany and Spain; annual Year 7 residential stay and extensive enrichment programme. Senior students work with West Kent Voluntary Service Unit; 2005 winner of Soho Writers drama competition; members of National Youth Choir, National Youth Orchestra, leading roles in National Youth Theatre and National Youth Music Theatre. Specialist mathematics and computing college status; successful roadshows and masterclasses for primary schools, as well as ICT opportunities for partnership schools and students in the local community with special learning needs. Over-subscribed, with more than three applications per place; applications from more than 70 schools. Artsmark Gold (2004); Sportsmark (2004); DfES achievement award (2003); Leading Edge status.
