Background:

Originally founded in 1846, the school still uses two of the original classrooms and the original hall, in addition to two classrooms which have since been added. A playground, field, pond, patio area, and variety of trees are all contained within the schools grounds, and there are plans to improve the sports facilities in the playing field. Through careful monitoring, the school aims to identify both those children with special educational needs and those who are exceptionally able, and individual programmes are created for them. Extra-curricular activities include gymnastics, music, football, netball, and regular coaching in cricket and tennis. Pupils also produce a yearly nativity play, while some participate in the Tunbridge Wells festival of arts where they have won cups in verse speaking. Children are also involved in many local sports tournaments, being most recently successful in tennis and cross country. In addition to the Parent-Teachers Association is the Friends of Penhurst School to which local residents subscribe.
