Background:

The school opened in 1971 in a new flat-roofed building with four classrooms. It has since been extended and there are now 14 classrooms, a hall, a library and a computer suite with 30 terminals. The 'well maintained' buildings occupy an attractive tree-lined site in a residential area on the north side of Maidstone, near the North Downs and with easy access to the M20. There are three playgrounds, a large level playing field with artificial cricket pitch and an environmental studies area with young trees planted by the children, wild flowers, hedges and a mini orchard. French and German are taught in addition to the National Curriculum. Music and sport are 'particular strengths'. Lessons are offered in piano, keyboard, guitar, violin, cello and flute. The orchestra took part in the finals of Music for Youth in 1999 and has performed at the Festival Hall. Sports include football, cricket, rugby, netball, cross-country, tennis, athletics, basketball and swimming. The rugby team has represented Maidstone at the Kent Youth Games. The school'supports charities such as the Salvation Army, Kent Association for the Blind and the Ockenden Venture. It is over-subscribed, receiving 1.5 applications for each place.
