Background:

This rural Methodist primary school is a 'very happy and growing' school serving the local villages and situated in the middle of the Kentish countryside. The site is a mixture of Victorian buildings and 1970s permanent buildings and huts. Recent demolition of older outside buildings has led to a new block for Years 3 and 4 and the establishment of a 'techmobile', a unit equipped for the teaching of technology, art, music and cooking. The grounds have been redesigned by parents and now include gardens, a pond and a conservation area. A 'wealth' of after-school activities are offered including basketball, tennis, art and photography. The school's strengths are the way in which it works 'with the children to develop self-esteem' and also the parent and Parent-Teacher's Association partnerships which raised most of the funds for renovation in 1999. 'A range of professional outside agencies, local community expertise and parent support' have been used by the school to enrich the curriculum and widen experience, especially in last year's 'millennium project'. A top priority is 'to provide an atmosphere for learning to take place which is challenging, exciting and motivating and where individual talents can be extended to the full'.
