Background:

Built in 1963, the school serves a large, well established housing estate on the eastern side of Gravesend. The modern school building offers 'large and airy' classrooms, each of which has large double-glazed windows. Riverview has 'ample' sporting facilites including two football pitches, five rounders pitches, an all-weather cricket square, three netball courts, and a large playground marked for a variety of curriculum activities. Riverside is 'notable for the variety of special environment areas in its grounds' such as an orchard, woodland, geology garden, butterfly garden and a meadow. In the quadrangle, there is also a nature reserve with a pond. The school has received recognition for its sporting achievements, having won local competitions for athletics, netball, football and cricket. There are 14 after-school or lunchtime clubs for children. Riverside makes good use of community resources. The school is let to three local community organisations and the pupils play a full role in community initatives, including links with the local hospice. Local businesses are involved with the school through weather projects and eco-school work. The local clergy regularly takes assemblies and the local police give community and anti-bullying talks to pupils each term. Charity work includes a link school in Romania, Russian orphans and Lions hospice. The school recently received a silver cup as an award for twelve years of fund-raising.
