Background:

Founded in 1888 on the edge of the city of Rochester, the school is now housed in a purpose-built modern building (1990) about two miles from the city centre, close to the M20 and M2 motorways. Facilities include a new sixth-form block (1999), technology and performing arts suite with recording studio, tiered seating in the main hall, with projector and cinema sound system, computing rooms and gym. There are eight modern laboratories. A full-time librarian provides study resources for staff and students. Sports facilities include a running track, hockey pitches, netball and tennis courts, an all-weather pitch. Music, sport and classics are a strength of the school. Full use is made of Rochester's history and environment. The school has pioneered a qualification to recognise the social qualities and learning skills in sixth-formers. There is a programme of school visits including trips to galleries, museums, and theatres as well as visits to Germany, France, Holland and even Iceland. Boys admitted to sixth form from September 2005. Combined specialist mathematics and computing college status as well as music college status from September 2004. Breakfast Club, from 7.30am; after-school Success Club, until 4.10pm. Over-subscribed, with nearly two applications per place. Artsmark Silver (2004).
