Background:

Opened in 1902, the school is situated near the centre of Canterbury. The main building was erected after the war, replacing the existing Victorian houses, and a playground was built over bomb damage. St Thomas' now has eight classes, seven in the main building and the eighth in a mobile unit. There is also a playground with a garden area and small playing field as well as a patio area for young children and hard asphalt play area for older pupils. Pupils from all over Canterbury and the surrounding areas are attracted to the school. This includes a number of pupils whose first language is not English as well as a 'significant proportion' of children with special educational needs. All pupils are 'valued and encouraged to celebrate their individual gifts and talents' as part of the school's status as a Catholic school. Parents are 'welcomed and encouraged to feel a sense of belonging to the school family'. A 'wide range' of extra-curricular activites is available including a dance club which 'regularly' performs at school events, and which, with the music group, takes part in church services including the annual ecumenical service in Canterbury Cathedral. The pupils have won prizes in local poetry and literacy competitions and their art work has been displayed in the public library. In sport, there have been successes in football, netball, rugby and athletics as well as participating in cricket and rounders. In Year 6, pupils take part in a residential adventure week where there are opportunities to participate in activities such as abseiling and orienteering. There are 'wide ranging' community links including with local parishes, secondary schools, and Christ Church university college. The school is 'regularly involved' in raising funds for a wide range of charities including the Catholic Children's Society and Canterbury Homeless Appeal at Christmas.
